How to Prepare for a Newborn Photo Session: What Every Mom Needs to Know
Alright, mama, you’ve booked your in-home newborn photo session—yay! First off, let me just say, you’re already crushing it. You’ve managed to do this while juggling feedings, diapers, and trying to figure out if it’s Monday or Friday (spoiler: does it even matter?).
The best part? You don’t even have to leave your house for this. I’ll come to you, so you can stay in your comfy space while we capture all the snuggly, love-filled moments.
Let’s talk about how to prep without losing your mind - or your snacks.

Your Home is Perfect as It Is
First things first: You don’t need a spotless house for this session. Seriously. I’m here to photograph your baby and your family’s love, not inspect your laundry pile.
That said, if it helps you feel less stressed, you can tidy up the spaces we’ll use - like the nursery, your bedroom, or the living room.
But trust me, no one’s going to notice if there’s a basket of laundry in the corner.

Pick Out Comfortable, Neutral Outfits
For your baby, keep it simple. Think soft, neutral onesies or swaddles that let their adorable squishiness shine.
For you? Choose something comfy and flattering that makes you feel like yourself. Flowy tops, soft dresses, or even a well-loved sweater can look amazing in photos.
Bonus: These outfits pair perfectly with cozy baby snuggles.
Pro Tip: Skip bright colors and bold patterns - they can distract from the moment. If you’re unsure, text me your outfit options!

I. Feed the Baby (and Yourself!)
A well-fed baby is a happy, sleepy baby. Plan to feed your little one about 30 minutes before the session starts.
And if they need to eat mid-session? No problem! We’ll take breaks whenever your baby needs - they call the shots here.
Also, don’t forget about yourself! Grab a snack and stay hydrated. A fed mama is just as important as a fed baby.
II. Think About Light
Natural light is the secret to dreamy photos. Before I arrive, take a quick peek around your home and see where you have natural light coming in that you would want to use in your photos.
For most, it's the parent's bedroom, nursery if you have one, and living room.
III. Relax, and Let It Be Real
Here’s the truth: Babies are unpredictable. They might cry, wiggle, or poop at the exact wrong moment (or, honestly, all of the above).
But guess what? That’s totally okay. Some of the sweetest photos come from the unexpected moments - the way your baby calms when you hold them close, or the little smirk they make after a big newborn stretch.
My goal isn’t to create perfection; it’s to capture the real magic of your family’s everyday moments.
