Is Golden Hour Really Worth Keeping Your Kids Up Past Bedtime?

"My kids go to bed at 7:30... is it really worth keeping them up for family photos?"

It's one of the questions I get asked the most, especially during the summer.

I completely understand why.

By evening, everyone's tired.

The toddler has already asked for seventeen snacks.

Someone is wearing yogurt.

Someone else is barefoot for reasons no one can explain.

The idea of getting everyone dressed and smiling sounds... ambitious.

So let's talk about why photographers love golden hour and whether it's actually worth stretching bedtime just a little.

First... What Is Golden Hour?

Golden hour is the hour(ish) before the sun sets.

The light is soft.

Warm.

Glowy.

Instead of bright sunshine making everyone squint, the light wraps around your family in the prettiest way.

It's one of the reasons outdoor family photos have that dreamy, cozy feeling.

But What About Bedtime?

Here's the part that surprises a lot of parents.

Most kids do way better than everyone expects.

They're outside.

They're running.

They're playing games.

They're snuggling Mom and Dad.

It doesn't feel like they're standing still for pictures.

It feels like an evening adventure.

And yes, every once in a while someone gets a little cranky.

That's okay.

I've photographed enough toddlers to know that moods can change in about twelve seconds.

Why I Still Recommend Evening Sessions

The light really is beautiful.

That's not the biggest reason.

Evenings tend to feel slower.

Dad is usually home from work.

Nobody is rushing off to school.

Families naturally settle into each other.

That's when I see the real smiles.

The real laughs.

The real connection.

Those are the moments you'll actually remember years from now.

A Few Things That Help

If you're worried about bedtime, here are a few tricks.

Bring a favorite snack.

Keep naps as normal as possible.

Pack pajamas for the drive home.

And maybe promise ice cream afterward.

Jessica's Take

After photographing hundreds of families, I can honestly say this...

I've never had a parent tell me,

"I wish we'd skipped the session because bedtime was thirty minutes late."

But I have had parents tell me how thankful they are that they made the memories.

One late bedtime is temporary.

The photos you'll hang on your walls and pass down to your kids?

Those stick around for a whole lot longer.
