When Is The Best Time of Year for Senior Photos in The PNW?

Another great question parents ask when planning senior photos is when to schedule them.

The truth is, there isn’t one perfect answer - the best time of year depends on your teen’s schedule, personality, and what kind of look you want from their photos.

As a high school senior photographer, I help families choose timing that feels realistic, low-stress, and actually works for their senior. The best options will be spring (perfect for cap & gown!) summer, and fall. All options will give you a great chance at decent weather AND a golden hour option.

Spring

Spring sessions are a great option for seniors who want a fresh, soft look and a little more flexibility in scheduling.

Why families love spring sessions:

  • Mild temperatures
  • Fresh greenery and lighter tones
  • Less competition for fall dates
  • A calmer pace before senior year gets busy

Spring is especially popular for juniors booking early or seniors who don’t want to wait until fall. It’s also a great time for seniors who prefer softer colors.

Summer

Summer is one of the most popular times for senior photos - and for good reason.

Why summer works well:

  • Longer daylight hours
  • Golden evening light
  • More flexible schedules without school
  • Plenty of outdoor location options

Summer sessions are ideal for seniors who want warm tones, casual outfits, and a laid-back experience. Because summer fills quickly, booking early is key if you’re aiming for these dates.

Fall

Fall is always in high demand for senior sessions (as well as every other type of session!), especially for families who love rich colors and cozy textures.

Why fall books fast:

  • Beautiful autumn tones
  • Cooler temperatures
  • A classic senior photo look
  • Limited availability due to school schedules along with busy season for photographers.

Because fall dates can be super limited, they tend to book out earlier than other seasons. If fall photos are important to you, planning ahead makes a big difference.

Cap & Gown

Cap & Gown photo sessions are generally a separate session.

Cap and gown photos typically happen in the spring and are offered as short, focused mini sessions.

These are designed to document graduation without the pressure of a full senior session and are scheduled separately from regular senior photos.

What to Consider When Choosing Timing

When deciding when to book senior photos, think about:

Your teen’s comfort with heat or cooler weather

Sports, activities, and school commitments

Whether your teen prefers lighter, brighter tones or deeper seasonal colors

How far in advance you want photos completed

The best senior photos happen when your teen isn’t rushed, stressed, or overwhelmed - timing plays a big role in that.

Senior photos don’t need to be complicated.

Choosing the right season helps set the tone for a relaxed session that feels natural and enjoyable for your teen - and that shows in the final images.
