Cap and gown photos are often treated like an afterthought - but they’re one of the most meaningful parts of senior year.
Once graduation comes and goes, this is the visual marker that says you did it. These sessions are short, simple, and focused, but they hold a lot of weight years down the road.
If you’re already wrapping up senior year and feeling ready to move on, this is your sign not to skip it.
When to Schedule Your Cap & Gown Session
Most families order caps and gowns during winter, with delivery happening closer to spring. The best time to plan your session is once your cap and gown have been ordered and you know when they will arrive.
Cap & gown sessions are typically offered as spring mini sessions and are designed to be quick, easy, and stress-free - perfect for this busy time of year.
Prep Matters (More Than You Think)
Before your session, take a little time to prep your cap and gown. It makes a huge difference in the final images.
A few important tips:
- Steam the gown before your session. Hanging it in the bathroom while a hot shower runs works great, or use a steamer very carefully.
- A dry cleaner can also steam it quickly if you’re short on time.
- Don’t skip this step - wrinkles and fold marks absolutely show in photos.
Bring your tassel, even if it feels small or easy to forget. It’s used in several classic shots you’ll be glad you have later.
A Note About Caps (Especially for Curly Hair)
Caps can be tricky, especially for seniors with thick or curly hair. Bobby pins, cap inserts, or headband-style supports can help keep it in place.
There are great options online, and it’s worth testing things out ahead of time so you’re not figuring it out on the spot.
We won’t wear the cap for every photo - but having it fit comfortably makes a big difference.
If you’re planning to decorate your cap, that’s totally fine. Just keep in mind whether it’s sturdy enough for toss photos, or plan to decorate it after your session if needed.
What Else to Bring
If you’ve earned cords, medals, or pins and want them included, bring them along. Even a few photos featuring these details can be meaningful later.
Some optional (but fun) ideas:
- A kindergarten or preschool graduation photo
- Flowers or leis
- A meaningful keepsake or family heirloom
- College sweatshirts, hats, or gear if you already have them
These little additions help personalize your session without overcomplicating things.
