Puyallup Outdoor Photographer

Capturing light, feelings &  moments and all the things in between people and life.

When it comes to family photography, there’s something truly special about outdoor sessions. The combination of fresh air, open spaces, and natural backdrops creates an environment that’s perfect for capturing authentic moments. As a photographer based in Puyallup and serving the surrounding areas, I love taking families to carefully sought out outdoor locations that offer both comfort and stunning backdrops.

I. Room to Move, Play, and Be Themselves

One of the biggest benefits of outdoor sessions is the versatility they provide —especially for kids. In a studio, kids might feel nervous or restricted, but outside, they can play, explore, and let their curious personalities shine.

For example, I recently had a session at my favorite spot in Orting, where the kids were free to roam and play while I snapped away. The parents loved how genuine and happy their children looked in the photos. This is why I often recommend open, natural spaces like a local park or for family sessions.

II. Beautiful, Ever-Changing Backdrops

Nature provides the perfect backdrop for family photos, and photos in general. Whether it’s the field full of wildflowers in, the golden hues as seasons change, or the snowy mountains in winter, outdoor photo sessions offer a unique setting that’s impossible to replicate indoors.

In Puyallup, locations like Decoursey Park, or Frontier Park provide stunning backdrops and plenty of versatility. For families willing to drive a bit further, Mt. Rainier areas offer a breathtaking backdrop with views of the mountains.

III. Natural Light Creates Magic

There’s nothing quite like the glow of natural light during an outdoor photo session. Whether it’s the soft cloud filtered light in the morning or the golden sunset glow just before sunset, natural light makes everyone look their sun kissed and glowy best.

When we schedule an outdoor session, I’ll work with you to find the best time of day for the location and desired look you want to achieve. At places like Ft. Steilacoom, the light just before sunset is truly breathtaking.

Stress-Free for Parents and Kids

Outdoor sessions tend to feel more like a fun family outing than a photoshoot. Parents are more relaxed, kids can expore, and everyone can just be. Plus, there’s no need to worry about props, toys or furniture - nature provides plenty of fun things for kids to interact with.

At a recent session in Puyallup, the kids were entertained by the tall grass and flowers while the parents got a few much needed moments for their own couples portraits. By the end of the session, the family felt happy and the mood was light.

Highlighting Local Gems

Living in the PNW means we’re surrounded by the best places perfect for outdoor photography. Here are a few of my tried and true spots:

  • Ft. Steilacoom Park: Known for its tall fields and spacious grounds, this is a great spot for outdoor photos.
  • Bradley Lake: The lake backdrop and wooded trails make this location a favorite for maternity and family sessions.
  • Pt. Defiance: Perfect for families who want a mix of flower gardens and beach if you take a short trip to Owens.
