It’s completely normal for teens to feel awkward about senior photos. Most students are a little nervous at first, and that’s okay!
As a local high school senior photographer in Puyallup, I’ve worked with plenty of teens who start the session unsure of themselves, and by the end, they’re relaxed, confident, and having fun.
The key is creating a low-pressure experience that feels natural, encouraging your teen to shine without forcing stiff poses.
Helping Your Teen Feel Comfortable
Here are some ways to help your teen feel at ease:
- Talk About the Session Ahead of Time: Explain what to expect and give them a chance to share any concerns. You can always share these with the photographer separately if your teen is shy.
- Bring a Friend or Sibling: A familiar face can ease nerves and make the session feel more like fun than work. Be careful with this one though, sometimes having an audience adds to the nerves instead of helps.
- Focus on Fun, Not Perfection: Encourage your teen to relax, laugh, and move naturally. Genuine smiles and candid moments are always better than forced poses.
- Incorporate Their Interests: Props, sports gear, or hobbies can make the session feel personal and exciting.
Tips for Parents
- Outfit Planning: Keep clothes comfortable and true to your teen’s style. Bring layers or accessories to add variety. For cap and gown sessions, make sure you try it all on together to make sure the base layer doesn't look silly with the robe on top.
- Timing Matters: Book your session when your teen is well-rested and not rushed. Fall sessions book quickly, so plan ahead.
- Encourage, Don’t Pressure: Let your teen know it’s okay to feel nervous. The more relaxed they are, the better the photos.
My Approach as a Senior Photographer
I guide teens lightly, offering prompts that feel natural rather than posed. I encourage movement, playful interaction, and real expressions, capturing your teen’s true personality.
Outdoor locations in and around Puyallup, Tacoma, Bonney Lake, and surrounding areas provide natural light and spacious settings, which help teens feel less restricted and more comfortable.
For teens who struggle with confidence in front of the camera, a relaxed, patient photographer makes all the difference. The goal is to produce senior photos that feel authentic, timeless, and truly representative of who your teen is right now.
Senior photos are about capturing your teen’s personality, confidence, and style.
A thoughtful, relaxed session produces images your teen will actually love and that you’ll treasure for years.
