Why You Shouldn’t Wait for the ‘Perfect Time’ to Book a Family Photo Session

Hey, mama, let’s have a little heart-to-heart about something we all do: waiting for the perfect moment. We tell ourselves we’ll book that overdue family photo session when we lose those last few pounds, when the kids can sit still for 5 minutes, or when life just feels a little less busy. Sound familiar?

But here’s the thing: there is no such thing as the perfect time. Life doesn’t slow down, kids don’t suddenly become calm, and honestly, would we even want them to?

Life Is Happening Now

Your toddler might still be throwing unimaginable fits when their snack cup is running empty, and your oldest might think it’s lame to smile for the camera. But guess what? That’s your life right now, and it’s absolutely normal.

Take it from me - I’ve photographed kiddos who showed up with grape juice stains on their face and moms who swore they’d never feel pretty in front of a camera. And yet, their photos turned out beautiful because they let me capture their beautiful chaos.

One time, a family showed up to their session stressed because their 1 year old had fallen asleep in the car. We let her wake up at her own pace, and her sleepy-eyed snuggles with mom became some of the most loved photos of the session.

Perfect Doesn’t Exist, But Connection Does

Here’s the deal: your kids won’t look back and remember whether their clothes were perfectly ironed or if their hair was a little less than perfect. What they’ll remember is the way you held them close, the way you soothed them after they fell, and the way you were always there.

And let’s be real - when’s the last time we looked at photo and thought, “Wow, her kids are perfectly put together”? Nope. We think, “Look at the joy on their faces!” or “You can feel the love in this picture!”

The Power of ‘Imperfect’ Photos

Some of my favorite photo sessions have been the ones where things didn’t go quite according to plan. Like the time a mom was so worried about her son’s cowlick, only for that little swirl of blondish-brown hair to become the thing she liked the most in every photo.

Or the time it started pouring down rain mid-session, and instead of panic quitting, the family danced in the rain together. Those are the real moments - the ones you can’t plan out, but the ones you’ll cherish forever.

So What Are You Waiting For?

If you’re waiting for the day when your house isn’t a mess, when your kids don’t have meltdowns, or when you feel like you’ve got it all perfectly together - please stop. You don’t need to be reaching for this unattainable Instagram perfect, because your family already is.

So let’s stop waiting and start planning! Let’s capture your family right now - the snuggles, the giggles, the adventure, and yes, even the tantrums.

Because one day, you’ll look back on these moments and realize they were the best moments of your life.
