How to Plan the Perfect Day Trip to Mount Rainier

If you’re looking for an unforgettable adventure in the Pacific Northwest, a day trip to Mt. Rainier is a must. With its breathtaking scenery, fresh mountain air, and endless opportunities for adventure, it’s the perfect spot for families, couples, or anyone who loves the outdoors. As a photographer, I can’t help but see the mountain as a perfect backdrop for magical family or maternity photos, but it’s also an incredible place to simply take it all in and make memories.

I. Pick Your Perfect Spot

Mount Rainier offers countless picture perfect destinations, but one of my favorites is Tipsoo Lake. This stunning little spot is ideal for family photos or just soaking in the breathtaking scenery. In summer, the wildflowers are in full bloom, making it a dream location for adventuring and photos alike.

Other great spots to consider include Tolmie Peak Trail for its majestic views and Christine Falls for a short hike with a spectacular reward at the end.

II. Plan for the Drive

From Puyallup, the drive to Mount Rainier is about an hour and filled with beautiful scenery. I recommend leaving first thing in the morning to beat the rush and make the most of your adventure. Pack plenty of snacks and drinks and don’t forget to fill up on gas before you head out—gas stations can be sporadic and expensive near the park.

III. Dress for the Adventure

The weather near Mount Rainier can be unpredictable, so it’s important to plan for anything. Layers are your best friend, as mornings can be chilly and afternoons warmer. If you’re planning a family or maternity session in the mountains, bring your photo outfits to change into once you reach your desired location.

How to Prepare

For a successful day trip, make sure to pack clothes, plenty of snacks, and a few drinks. If you’re traveling with young kids, bring along some toys and snacks to keep them content during the drive and hikes. Don’t forget a towel or blanket if you plan to sit by the lake or take a rest break.

Mount Rainier provides so many photo opportunities that you’ll want to capture every moment.

Explore, Relax, and Take It All In

Once you arrive, let your desire for the memories set the tone for the day. Whether you’re hiking a mountain trail, having a family picnic by the lake, or just enjoying the views, there’s no wrong way to experience Mount Rainier.

If you’re incorporating a photo session into your trip, spots like Tipsoo Lake are perfect for family or maternity photos with a breathtaking backdrop. Even if you’re just snapping some cell phone shots of your kids exploring the wildflowers, you’ll leave with memories to cherish forever.
